Elucidating the promoting role of Mo2C in methane activation using Ni-xMo2C/FAU to catalyze methane steam reforming

We report the synthesis and characterization, reaction kinetics, deactivation mechanism of a series catalysts with metallic nickel (Ni) molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) particles supported on zeolite Y (Ni-Mo2C/FAU) in methane steam reforming (MSR) at 850 °C. Despite low Ni loading 2.4 wt%, MSR Ni-Mo2C/FAU exhibits high activity stability, yet Ni-FAU is significant. Further investigations elucidate that catalyst caused by particle sintering via Ostwald ripening instead coking, induces hydroxylated surface accelerates sintering. Moreover, Mo2C boosts stability enhancing CH4 activation rather than activating H2O. The interplays among dynamically balance carbon formation consumption rates, inhibit This study demonstrates can be achieved transition metal – systematically tuned compositional, structural, interfacial factors.
